What is a washing machine filter?

The washing machine filter is a small mesh screen or strainer located inside the appliance. Its primary function is to prevent lint, hair, and other debris from clogging the machine's pump and causing drainage issues.

Where is the washing machine filter?

The location of the washing machine filter varies depending on the model and manufacturer. In some machines, the filter is located at the front or back of the machine, while in others, it's inside the machine, behind a panel or door. Please refer to your user manual to learn the precise location of your washing machine's filter.

Why should you clean a washing machine filter?

A dirty or clogged washing machine filter can result in drainage issues, preventing your machine from completing a wash cycle. Over time, a clogged filter can also lead to a build-up of bacteria, mould, and other contaminants, which can cause unpleasant odours and even damage to your machine.

How often should you clean a washing machine filter?

We recommend cleaning your washing machine filter every month to ensure your machine continues to operate at maximum efficiency. If you have pets or frequently wash heavily soiled items, you may need to clean the filter more often.

How to clean your washing machine's filter

Now that you know the importance of cleaning your washing machine filter and how frequently you should do it, it's time to learn the steps required to keep your machine clean, hygienic, and ready for use. Here’s our step-by-step guide:

  1. Locate the filter. Consult your washing machine's manual to find the location of the filter. On a Beko model, the filter is housed behind a flap on the front of the machine.
  2. Turn off the machine. Make sure the machine is switched off and unplugged from the power source.
  3. Put a towel down. Place a towel or similar item in front of the filter to protect the floor. Have a container to hand to catch any water that leaks out when you remove the pump filter.
  4. Remove the emergency drain hose. Some models will have an emergency drain hose located next to the filter. Pull the drainage hose out and remove the stopper. Once this is removed, drain the water into a container before refitting the stopper and placing the drainage hose back.
  5. Remove the filter. Depending on the model of your washing machine, you may need to unscrew the filter or simply pull it out. The filter can be removed on Beko models by opening the flap and rotating the filter anti-clockwise.
  6. Clean the filter. Use a soft-bristled brush or cloth to remove any debris from the filter. Once the filter is clean, replace it in its original location and secure it in place.
  7. Turn the machine back on. Plug the machine back in and turn it on to ensure it's working correctly.

By following these simple steps regularly, you can ensure your machine continues to run smoothly whilst also preventing any potential issues down the road.
