How to clean a cooker hood filter

How to clean a cooker hood filter

If you've recently purchased a cooker hood, you may be wondering how to keep the filters clean. It’s important to regularly clean the grease filters on your cooker hood to ensure that your appliance is looking and working at its best. By regularly cleaning the grease filters on your cooker hood, you can make sure grease and odours are being removed from your home effectively, keeping your kitchen smelling clean and fresh in the process.

Cooker hoods offer a stylish, practical way to keep your kitchen clean and hygienic. When turned on, cooker hoods help to reduce airborne grease, smoke and condensation while you’re cooking. There are two different types of cooker hoods: vented and recirculating. Vented cooker hoods expel cooking smells outside of the property, meaning they must be installed near and outside wall. Unlike vented cooker hoods, recirculating cooker hoods pass air through a carbon filter to capture smells as well as a grease filter. If your kitchen space won’t let you install your cooker hood near an outside wall, our range of recirculating cooker hoods feature carbon filters, which effectively remove odours, before recycling fresh, clean air back into your kitchen.

Instructions:

As aforementioned, it is important to clean your cooker hood on a regularly basis. The frequency of your cleaning routine will depend on how often you use the appliance, however, as a general rule, we suggest cleaning your hood’s filters on a monthly basis. Failure to carry out the basic cleaning recommendations of the cooker hood and the replacement of filters may cause fire risks. Beko cooker hoods feature three different filters, the grease filter, the washable activated charcoal filter and the non-washable activated charcoal filter. To clean these filters, please follow the instructions below.

Before cleaning your appliance, please isolate the hood from the electrical supply by switching it off at the connector and removing the connector fuse. Alternatively, if the appliance has been connected through a plug socket, the plug must be removed from the socket.

Grease Filter

The grease filter traps grease particles while you are cooking. This must be cleaned once a month or when the filter saturation indication system, featured on select models, indicates this is necessary.

  1. To remove the grease filter, pull the spring release handle.
  2. Once removed, soak the grease filter in a non-aggressive detergent for thirty minutes and gently scrub the filter using an old toothbrush or dish brush. Alternatively, wash the filter in the dishwasher, using a low temperature, short cycle.*
  3. Rinse the filter with clear water and leave to dry thoroughly before replacing it into the cooker hood.

*When washed in a dishwasher, the grease filter may discolour slightly. Please note that this does not affect its filtering capacity.

Charcoal Filters (Filter Version Only)

The charcoal filter absorbs unpleasant odours caused by cooking. The activated charcoal filter can be one of two filters: washable activated charcoal filter or non-washable activated charcoal filter.

Washable Activated Charcoal Filter:

  1. The charcoal filter can be washed once every two months using hot water and a suitable detergent. Alternatively, the filter can be washed in a dishwasher at 65°C. Please note, when using a dishwasher, select the full cycle function and leave the dishes out.
  2. Leave to dry thoroughly.
  3. Remove the mattress located inside the plastic frame and put it in the oven for 10 minutes at 100°C to dry completely.
  4. Replace the mattress every three years and when the cloth is damaged.

Non-Washable Activated Charcoal Filter:

The saturation of the charcoal filter will depend on the type of cooking you are doing and the regularity in which you clean the grease filter. In any case, it is necessary to replace the cartridge at lease every four months. For more information, please read our dedicated ‘how to replace a cooker hood filter’ FAQ. The charcoal filter may not be washed or regenerated.
