Whilst we suggest you deeply clean your machine every few months, the frequency of your cleaning will depend on how much food your store in your fridge as well as how regularly you use the appliance. By regularly cleaning your fridge, you can prevent the build of bacteria and odours, creating a hygienic environment for your food to be stored in.

Steps to take when cleaning your Fridge Freezer

  1. Disconnect your fridge freezer from the mains supply
  2. Remove any food items from the fridge and freezer, packing them into cooling bags, ensuring they’re stored in a cool, dry place during the cleaning process
  3. Remove all detachable parts like draws, shelves, and racks. Note: Check your manual to find out which parts are dishwasher safe.
  4. Wash the detachable parts with a sponge, water, and washing up liquid
  5. Mix ½L lukewarm water with 1 tbsp. bicarbonate of soda
  6. Using the mixture, wipe the inside of the fridge and door seal with a soft cloth
  7. Dry with a clean cloth

Checking the Drain Hole

Another good thing to be aware of, is whether any food gets stuck in the drain hole, which can be found at the back of your fridge. It’s easy to forget about this drain hole, but if food gets stuck here, it can cause unpleasant smells. Watch the video above to see how to check and clean the drain hole. Or, follow these quick and easy steps to find out how to do this:

  1. Check that no food or drink has spilt into the drain hole at the back of your fridge
  2. Use the supplied plunger to help push anything that may have spilt into the hole
  3. Flush the drain hole with the mixture of water and bicarbonate of soda to push food or liquid into the drip tray at the back of the fridge freezer
  4. If anything has spilt into the drip tray, empty it and wipe with a damp cloth
  5. Refit all detachable parts and place your food back into your fridge freezer

How to stop your fridge from smelling

Occasionally, you might notice unpleasant smells coming from your fridge freezer. Before cleaning your fridge, you’ll want to first make sure that the smells aren’t coming from food or drink which may have gone out of date.
