Yes, a dishwasher can save a significant amount of time. While the wash cycle itself may take longer than handwashing, the main benefit is that you don't need to stand at the sink scrubbing and rinsing dishes. You simply load the dishwasher, let it run, and unload once it's finished.

Dishwashers are also more hygienic than washing by hand, as they use higher temperatures to remove grease, bacteria and food residue more effectively.

The average dishwasher consumes around 1.2 to 1.5 kWh per cycle. This can vary based on the model, the wash cycle selected, and how full the dishwasher is. Based on an average energy use of 1.35 kWh and the UK electricity rate of 27.7p per kWh (1st January to 31st March 2026), the cost works out at approximately 37p per cycle.

Quick wash cycles are best suited for lightly soiled dishes such as plates, cups, glasses and cutlery that have been recently used and don't have dried-on food or heavy grease.

They're ideal when you need clean items quickly, but for pots, pans or heavily soiled cookware, a longer or more intensive programme will deliver better results.
