Humidity, Condensation and Cooling Zones: How Your Refrigeration Works

Your daily routine probably has you opening the fridge a few times a day, whether it's grabbing the milk for your morning coffee or keeping ingredients fresh for dinner. But have you ever stopped to wonder how your fridge actually works?

Here, we'll take you through the key components inside a modern refrigerator and explain how they work together to create the refrigeration cycle that keeps your food and drinks perfectly chilled.

The Key Components of a Functioning Fridge

One of the main reasons we rely on fridges is to slow down the growth of bacteria on fresh food, helping groceries stay safe to eat for longer. By keeping temperatures optimum and stable, your fridge can help reduce spoilage and keep ingredients fresher day after day.

To do this, several key parts work together behind the scenes to keep cold air circulating efficiently throughout the appliance.

Compressor

Compressor

Often referred to as the heart of a fridge, the compressor pumps refrigerant around the system. It plays a key role in creating the cooling effect needed to keep the temperature inside your fridge consistently low.

Condenser

Condenser

The condenser is usually located at the back of the fridge. Its job is to release heat from the refrigerant, helping it cool down and change from a gas into a liquid.

Door Seal

Door Seal

The door seal (also known as a gasket) is typically made from rubber or silicone. It creates a tight seal when the fridge door is closed, preventing cold air from escaping and keeping warm air out. This helps your fridge stay at a stable temperature and run more efficiently.

Evaporator

Evaporator

Located inside the fridge, the evaporator absorbs heat from the compartment. This is what helps lower the temperature and create the chilled environment that keeps your food fresh.

Expansion Valve

Expansion Valve

Sometimes called a throttle valve, the expansion valve controls the flow of refrigerant. It reduces the pressure of the liquid refrigerant, allowing it to cool rapidly before it reaches the evaporator.

Thermostat

Thermostat

The thermostat is the control system that allows you to set your fridge to your preferred temperature. It monitors the internal temperature and tells the compressor when to switch on and off to keep conditions stable.

How a Fridge's Components Form the Refrigeration Cycle

Although it might seem complicated, the refrigeration cycle is a simple process that happens continuously to keep your fridge cool.

Here's an easy way to understand how it works:

  1. The thermostat monitors the temperature inside the fridge. When it rises above the set level, it signals that cooling is needed.
  2. The compressor switches on and pressurises the refrigerant, turning it into a hot gas.
  3. The hot refrigerant gas travels to the condenser, where heat is released and the refrigerant cools into a liquid.
  4. The liquid refrigerant passes through the expansion valve, where pressure drops and it becomes much colder.
  5. The cold refrigerant then flows through the evaporator, absorbing heat from inside the fridge and lowering the internal temperature.
  6. The refrigerant turns back into a gas and returns to the compressor, ready for the cycle to begin again.

This continuous process is what keeps your food chilled and helps your fridge maintain a consistent temperature throughout the day.

The Innovative Features Which Help Beko Fridges to Stand Out

While all modern fridges rely on the same basic refrigeration cycle, Beko appliances are designed to go further ‐ helping to keep your food fresher for longer with innovative features built around everyday life.

Many of our fridges and fridge freezers include advanced cooling technologies such as:

HarvestFresh™ Technology

HarvestFresh™ technology uses innovative three-colour light inside the crisper drawer to simulate the sun's natural 24-hour cycle. This helps preserve vitamins in fruit and vegetables, so you can enjoy fresher ingredients for longer.

AeroFlow™ Technology

Designed to support even cooling across every shelf, AeroFlow™ technology helps minimise temperature fluctuations inside the fridge. By distributing cold air more gently and consistently, it helps keep food fresher and reduces drying out.

Dairy Compartment

Some Beko models include a dedicated dairy compartment, designed to maintain a lower temperature of around 0°C. It's ideal for storing meat, fish and dairy products, helping to keep them fresher for longer.

Quick Cool Setting

Perfect after a big shop, Quick Cool rapidly lowers the temperature inside your fridge. This helps chill newly added groceries quickly and supports freshness by bringing the compartment back to its ideal temperature sooner.

Bring reliable, stylish refrigeration into your home today by shopping our entire range of fridges and fridge freezers. With a wide choice of sizes and designs, it's easy to find the right fit for your kitchen.
