What is the difference between vented and recirculating?

Vented extraction expels cooking smells to the outside of the property. Recirculating will mean the air is passed through the filters to capture grease and smells. It is repeated until the hood is turned off. In most cases a vented hood is preferable, however a recirculating option will remove smells.
