Why is my dishwasher not cleaning?

There are several reasons why your dishwasher may not be cleaning your dishes properly. It is important to rectify the issue on your appliance promptly to make sure your crockery is cleaned correctly, ensuring excellent hygiene results.

My dishwasher is not getting my dishes clean

Dishwashers not cleaning dishes properly is a common issue and usually means that there is a blockage in the machine. This is commonly caused by a collection of food debris in the machine which block the appliance’s filter or spray arms.

Common reasons why your dishwasher is not cleaning your dishes:

  1. Blocked Filter. To ensure you dishwasher is performing at maximum efficiency, it is important to regularly clean your appliance’s filter. In doing so, you can ensure your appliance delivers excellent cleaning results.   2. Blocked Spray Arm. If you are finding that your dishwasher is not rinsing your dishes, it may be that the appliance’s spray arm is blocked. To rectify this, remove the spray arm and rinse under a tap to clear any blocked nozzles. For more instructions, including easy-to-follow videos, please read our detailed how to clean a dishwasher
  3. Low water temperature. To remove germs from household items, water needs to reach a temperature above 65°C.[1] A high temperature is also needed to dissolve excess food and remove tough stains. To ensure excellent dishwashing results, it is important to select a wash cycle with a suitable temperature for your dishes.
  4. Selecting the correct wash cycle or overloading. Make sure you are using a suitable washing programme for the level of soiling on your dishes, the quantity of dishes you are washing and ensure you aren't overloading your dishwasher.   5. Water hardness. If you are using the dishwasher for the first time, you will need to add 1 litre of water to the dishwasher's salt reservoir and then stir with a spoon.
